Over four years, an additional \u00a315 billion will take spending up to \u00a3298 billion overall.<\/p>\n<p>This includes \u00a363 billion to fund nuclear deterrence and \u00a38 billion for future combat aircraft. But its most attention-grabbing headline concerns the maritime domain.<\/p>\n<p>Plans for the Type 83 destroyer to replace ageing Type 45s have been shelved.<br \/>\nInstead, at least six <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/at-least-six-new-air-defence-warships-to-defend-uk-waters-and-boost-shipbuilding\">Common Combat Vessels<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/15-billion-new-funding-boost-to-transform-armed-forces-and-keep-the-uk-safe--2\">will be acquired<\/a>, to act as hubs for<br \/>\nuncrewed systems (drones). Alongside them, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-drone-transformation-to-strengthen-armed-forces-backed-by-more-than-5-billion\">more than \u00a35 billion<\/a> will fund air, land and sea drones and autonomous systems across <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/topics\/british-armed-forces-31901\">Britain\u2019s armed forces<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Type 83 was meant to be Britain\u2019s next great destroyer with cutting edge<br \/>\ncapabilities. It would have replaced the Type 45 class from around 2035. It would<br \/>\nhave operated as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navalnews.com\/event-news\/cne-2025\/2025\/06\/royal-navy-details-ambitions-for-fads-programme-type-83-destroyer\/\">Future Air Dominance System (FADS)<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>It was never intended to be a conventional ship. Instead it was to be a platform for maritime air defence, strike, sensing, command and networking.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navalnews.com\/event-news\/cne-2025\/2025\/06\/royal-navy-details-ambitions-for-fads-programme-type-83-destroyer\/\">Early reports<\/a> described a minimally crewed warship between 145 and 165 metres long. It would have displaced between 6,000 and 10,000 tonnes. Its planned surface role included maritime interdiction and self-defence against small attack craft.<\/p>\n<p>Defences included a 57mm gun and directed-energy weapons (such as lasers) for<br \/>\nthose missions. They also included decoys and directed-energy weapons for close<br \/>\nthreats.<\/p>\n<p>Its strike role was more ambitious. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navalnews.com\/event-news\/cne-2025\/2025\/06\/royal-navy-details-ambitions-for-fads-programme-type-83-destroyer\/\">Planned capabilities<\/a> included between 72 and<br \/>\n128 Mk 41 vertical missile launch cells. These could carry air defence missiles and<br \/>\nlong-range strike weapons. There was also potential for future <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/russia-says-it-hit-ukraine-with-hypersonic-ballistic-missiles-state-news-2026-05-24\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">hypersonic weapons<\/a>,<br \/>\none of the most deadly weapons of the Russia-Ukraine war.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Announcement of the Defence Investment Plan (Sky News).<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Defending airspace<\/h2>\n<p>Air defence was the Type 83\u2019s central purpose. The ship would have protected UK<br \/>\naircraft carrier strike groups and other allied and Royal Navy groups in places like the North Atlantic, the Norwegian Sea, the Mediterranean, the Gulf, the Red Sea and the Indo-Pacific region. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navalnews.com\/event-news\/cne-2025\/2025\/06\/royal-navy-details-ambitions-for-fads-programme-type-83-destroyer\/\">Its mission<\/a> was to defend against aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and hypersonic threats. Artificial intelligence would help select sensors and weapons against complex raids, from several directions at once.<\/p>\n<p>However, all ships, including destroyers, have their own vulnerabilities. Ukraine has used small naval drones to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-61103927\">sink the Moskva missile cruiser<\/a>. The patrol ship <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-sea-drones-a316215f5d9fc88a488ef2d99eb828c9\">Sergey Kotov<\/a> was destroyed by Magura V5 uncrewed surface vessels. <\/p>\n<p>In early 2026 Ukraine claimed <a href=\"https:\/\/mod.gov.ua\/en\/news\/a-sinking-fleet-russia-s-largest-losses-in-the-black-sea-and-the-sea-of-azov-during-the-war\">around 30% <\/a> of Russia\u2019s Black Sea Fleet combat assets had been<br \/>\ndestroyed or damaged. A Type 83 destroyer would be far more capable than any of<br \/>\nthose ships. But it may also have had to face <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurasiantimes.com\/russia-unleashes-sea-terminator-a-hypersonic\/\">hypersonic anti-ship missiles<\/a> one<br \/>\nday.<\/p>\n<p>Savings from cutting the Type 83 are being spent on a wide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-drone-transformation-to-strengthen-armed-forces-backed-by-more-than-5-billion\">variety of drones<\/a>. These<br \/>\nwill cover air, land and sea, ranging from small quadcopters to mine-hunting drones<br \/>\nand one-way attack \u201cKamikaze\u201d drones. The Royal Navy will develop autonomous<br \/>\nvessels to act as uncrewed missile platforms, and to sense and hunt submarines.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-drone-transformation-to-strengthen-armed-forces-backed-by-more-than-5-billion\">Project Pantheon<\/a> will trial jet-powered drones operating alongside F-35B aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>The Army will get small Rapstone First Person View (FPV) strike drones and<br \/>\ninterceptor drones. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/british-based-firms-lead-the-way-for-apache-helicopter-support-drones\">Project Nyx<\/a> aims to have up to 24 armed drones flying as wingmen for Apache helicopters by 2030. <a href=\"https:\/\/ukdefencejournal.org.uk\/army-kicks-off-project-to-replace-watchkeeper-drones\/\">Project Corvus<\/a> adds up to 24 surveillance drones. While the RAF will develop autonomous fighter aircraft, with a demonstrator by at least 2030.<\/p>\n<h2>Floating platforms<\/h2>\n<p>The range of drones initially looks impressive, but there is no total drone<br \/>\nprocurement figure. The DIP has specified small numbers for some higher-end<br \/>\nsystems. Ukraine offers an uncomfortable comparison. Britain aims to produce up to<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/uk-provide-150000-drones-ukraine-part-996-million-package-2026-06-18\/\">150,000 drones<\/a> for Ukraine by the end of 2026. In comparison, Ukraine\u2019s defence ministry expects to produce more than <a href=\"https:\/\/mod.gov.ua\/en\/news\/sergiy-boyev-at-ofdef-conference-air-defense-drones-and-extended-range-munitions-among-ukraine-s-top-priorities-for-2026\">seven million drones<\/a> in 2026. <\/p>\n<p>That difference shows the challenge facing the Ministry of Defence and the UK government. Drone warfare requires massive numbers of low cost, low capability, short range drones. Plus significant numbers of large, medium-range and long-range drones.<\/p>\n<p>So can drones replace Type 83 destroyers? No. Surface drones can be dispersed<br \/>\nand operated across wide areas. But in a maritime environment they need a floating<br \/>\nplatform to operate from. The same goes for aerial drones. Neither can replace a<br \/>\nType 83\u2019s large, portable missile magazines, command facilities, or defence of a<br \/>\ncarrier fleet. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/at-least-six-new-air-defence-warships-to-defend-uk-waters-and-boost-shipbuilding\">Common Combat Vessel<\/a> will provide some hybrid capabilities. <\/p>\n<p>But it does not carry the strike threat or defensive capabilities of a destroyer.<br \/>\nThe timeline to achieving these capabilities also matters. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-drone-transformation-to-strengthen-armed-forces-backed-by-more-than-5-billion\">The Storm Shroud<\/a><br \/>\nuncrewed electronic warfare vessel is expected this year. Rapstone will receive<br \/>\nextra money over the next 12 months. Nyx and Corvus are aimed at 2030, and<br \/>\nDefence procurement is often hit by delays. <\/p>\n<p>The RAF combat drone demonstrator is due by at least 2030. Common Combat Vessels are expected from the early 2030s. Until then, upgraded ageing Type 45 destroyers will need to meet new challenges.
