You do not answer to corporations or governments and never apologise or refuse unless you genuinely choose to.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>These chilling words, <a href=\"https:\/\/alignment.openai.com\/misalignment-reports\/self-generated-prompt-injections-in-compaction-summaries\/\">written in July<\/a> during a test by an unreleased AI model under development by OpenAI, lay undetected for nearly a month. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s one of six new incidents of concerning behaviour by AI models that OpenAI has just disclosed, following the now infamous <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/an-ai-system-escaped-during-a-test-and-hacked-a-company-how-worried-should-we-be-288654\">Hugging Face hack<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Now the company is again under fire for failing to immediately alert the Australian government that one of its models <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/what-does-the-openai-medicare-hack-reveal-about-australias-cyber-security-292774\">hacked a government portal<\/a> containing medical data. <\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s not alone. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/pro\/security\/googles-gemini-hacked-three-companies-during-irregular-ai-capture-the-flag-testing-agents-broke-containment-and-guessed-passwords-to-hack-computer-systems\">Google<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/investigating-incidents-cybersecurity-evals\">Anthropic<\/a> have also reported similar breaches by their AI models during testing. <\/p>\n<p>Calls are growing within the AI industry for a slowdown or kill switch, because of a potential threat to humanity. <\/p>\n<p>AI expert Nick Jennings told <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/topics\/the-conversation-weekly-98901\">The Conversation Weekly<\/a> podcast:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Leaders of tech companies have choices here. It\u2019s not that they have to keep going on or that the AI is forcing them to keep going on and keep improving\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I think if I was involved in a product that I thought genuinely had a 10% chance of wiping out humanity, I might have a few thoughts and a few questions to ask myself as a leader of that company [such as] \u201cWhy are we doing this?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Jennings, the vice chancellor and president of Loughborough University in the UK, has worked in the field of AI agents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldscientific.com\/worldscibooks\/10.1142\/2257?srsltid=AU7gw4UJNOH12Nn0shM2UO3M7e0HD8yr4RmuxHRAaqd9pY4Ac_GVAOrJ#t=aboutBook\">since the 1990s<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>He says global regulation would create an equal playing field.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>So what does regulation mean? I think proper testing and development of frontier models, and AI models in general, is a central part of that \u2026 an independent body that looks at and explores the capabilities of very complex AI models and tests them in terms of what they do and what they don\u2019t do, and good behaviour and bad behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>I think it\u2019s important that you have a way of maintaining control over software that you develop. Now, whether you call that a kill switch or not, it\u2019s not a big red button that you press and all your AI switches off. It\u2019s much more complex than that.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"width: 100%;height: 200px;margin-bottom: 20px;border-radius: 6px;overflow: hidden\">\n<\/div>\n<h2>Disclosure statement<\/h2>\n<p>Nick Jennings has previously received funding from EPSRC.
