Grown using living organisms, they\u2019re often showcased as the next generation of sustainable materials \u2014 promising <a href=\"https:\/\/pangaia.com\/pages\/leather-alternatives-grape-leather?srsltid=AfmBOorHPJXnKPCeiPIMp8TjpFJOvplaEN0WBZ_MTSjH21vRDHrpoTPx\">alternatives to leather<\/a>, polyester and other conventional textiles. <\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/paris.premierevision.com\/en\/\">Premi\u00e8re Vision Paris<\/a> international textile trade show highlights biofabricated materials as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/topics\/sustainable-fashion-36369\">fashion\u2019s future<\/a>. It is showcasing innovations grown from fungi, bacteria and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.co.uk\/fashion\/bc\/ganni-bou-bag\">agricultural waste<\/a> alongside discussions about artificial intelligence and next-generation manufacturing. <\/p>\n<p>This may give the impression that the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/biomimetics4010016\">next generation of clothing<\/a> is just around the corner. Yet open almost any wardrobe and you\u2019ll find the same fibres that have dominated for decades: cotton, polyester, wool and leather. <\/p>\n<p>So why is there such a gap between the headlines and the high street?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to assume the answer is cost. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biofabricate.co\/\">Biofabricated materials<\/a> are often associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/can-feathers-ever-be-ethical-stella-mccartney-is-betting-on-it\">luxury fashion<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ideas.ted.com\/the-skirt-and-shoe-made-from-kombucha\/\">concept collections<\/a>, making them seem out of reach for everyday consumers. Cost certainly matters, but is definitely not the whole story. <\/p>\n<p>Developing a new material is only the first step. Convincing an industry built around traditional textiles to adopt it is a very different challenge. The science has moved faster than the fashion system it feeds into. <\/p>\n<p>Research into biofabricated materials has accelerated rapidly over the past decade. Scientists can now grow sheets of <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.nxsust.2025.100211\">bacterial cellulose<\/a>, produce <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.susmat.2023.e00724\">leather-like materials from fungi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fashionforgood.com\/case-study\/agriwaste-natural-fibres\/\">transform agricultural waste into fibres<\/a> with remarkable properties. <\/p>\n<p>From a scientific perspective, these advances are extraordinary. But science alone doesn\u2019t put a new material into people\u2019s wardrobes.<\/p>\n<p>Every new biofabricated material enters a world in which existing textiles have already been refined over decades, and in some cases centuries. But growing a material is only the beginning. They then need to be dried, coloured, finished, tested, manufactured consistently and produced at a scale that global fashion brands can rely on. <\/p>\n<p>Mainstream fashion manufacturers need repeatability \u2013 the same material, colour and  performance every time. Living systems don\u2019t always behave like that. Small changes in growing conditions can produce different outcomes, creating challenges that don\u2019t exist with established synthetic manufacturing. <\/p>\n<p>As with conventional textiles, sustainability depends on the entire life cycle of a material \u2014 not simply where it originated. \u201cBio\u201d doesn\u2019t automatically mean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/future\/article\/20220330-why-bio-and-green-dont-mean-what-you-think\">environmentally friendly<\/a>. Many biofabricated materials still require <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/663ce4648cdbf24a1fa5567d\/t\/697b90b1893e675caee33ccc\/1769\">chemical treatments, coatings or additional processing<\/a> to achieve the durability and performance consumers expect. It\u2019s the gap between the laboratory, the designer, the manufacturer and, ultimately, the consumer. <\/p>\n<p>Fashion designers rarely begin with a sketch; they start with materials. The weight, flexibility, texture and behaviour of a material all influence what eventually becomes a garment or accessory. But most fashion designers <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/15487733.2022.2124740\">rarely get the opportunity<\/a> to handle or design with biofabricated materials. <\/p>\n<p>The fashion industry doesn\u2019t lack innovative new materials. It lacks the systems, supply chains and opportunities needed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fashionforgood.com\/our_news\/understanding-bio-material-innovations-a-primer-for-the-fashion-industry\/\">translate these innovations into products<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fashionforgood.com\/topic_area\/next-gen-materials\/\">people can actually buy<\/a>, wear and understand. <\/p>\n<p>If biofabricated materials are to fulfil their promise, the question should not simply be whether they can replicate or replace materials such as leather. Researchers, designers and manufacturers need to understand where biomaterial properties offer something genuinely useful, how they can work within \u2013 or reshape \u2013 existing manufacturing systems, and whether they deliver environmental benefits across their entire life cycle.<\/p>\n<p>The biofabricated fashion revolution may still be coming.
