Much of the country has received less rain than usual so far, yet has still been hit by severe floods and landslides. In the southern state of Kerala, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/explained\/explained-climate\/kerala-floods-explained-silted-rivers-wetlands-10819189\/\">devastating floods<\/a> occurred despite the overall monsoon rainfall remaining well below average.<\/p>\n<p>A weaker monsoon does not necessarily mean an absence of extreme rainfall. Rainfall can be highly uneven, with long dry spells broken by intense cloudbursts that cause flooding and landslides. This year\u2019s experience in Kerala illustrates the apparent contradiction: a season that is dry overall can <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/indias-monsoon-is-becoming-more-extreme-even-though-overall-rainfall-has-hardly-increased-267159\">still produce devastating rainfall<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Amid this highly uneven monsoon, attention is also turning to something happening thousands of kilometres away in the tropical Pacific Ocean: El Ni\u00f1o.<\/p>\n<p>It is well established that El Ni\u00f1o years, when certain parts of the Pacific are warmer than usual, are often associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1175\/1520-0493(1983)111%3C0517:TRBEEP%3E2.0.CO;2\">weaker Indian monsoon rainfall<\/a>. Meanwhile La Ni\u00f1a \u2013 the opposite state to El Ni\u00f1o \u2013 tends to favour wetter conditions. This year, El Ni\u00f1o conditions have developed rapidly in the Pacific, with forecasts suggesting it could become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/analysis_monitoring\/lanina\/enso_evolution-status-fcsts-web.pdf\">exceptionally strong<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A super-strong El Ni\u00f1o could have important implications for hundreds of millions of people across India, particularly later in the monsoon, when the relationship between the two tends to become stronger.<\/p>\n<h2>An uneven monsoon<\/h2>\n<p>Before the monsoon even began, the India Meteorological Department was already expecting a weaker-than-usual season, partly because of the anticipated development of El Ni\u00f1o. Its first long-range forecast in April predicted June-September rainfall at <a href=\"https:\/\/internal.imd.gov.in\/press_release\/20260415_pr_4893.pdf\">around 92% of the long-term average<\/a>. So far, rainfall has broadly followed this below-normal outlook, although with considerable fluctuations. By mid-June, rainfall across India was <a href=\"https:\/\/internal.imd.gov.in\/press_release\/20260618_pr_5084.pdf\">nearly 40% below normal<\/a>, before several active monsoon spells reduced the deficit. By early August, cumulative rainfall was still around <a href=\"https:\/\/internal.imd.gov.in\/press_release\/20260813_pr_5232.pdf\">12% below average nationally<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But these national and seasonal averages hide an important part of the picture. Take Kerala. Between June 1 and August 5 2026, the state received <a href=\"https:\/\/internal.imd.gov.in\/press_release\/20260813_pr_5232.pdf\">around 22% less rainfall than normal<\/a>. By August 5, <a href=\"https:\/\/theprint.in\/india\/kerala-govt-announces-relief-package-as-monsoon-toll-rises-to-26\/3005772\/\">26 people had died<\/a> in monsoon-related incidents across Kerala. Among them were a mother and son who were killed when a landslide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/kerala\/landslip-claims-mother-and-son-in-poonjar\/article71293671.ece\">buried their home<\/a> in Poonjar, Kottayam \u2013 a tragedy that felt especially close to home because my aunt knew the family.<\/p>\n<p>But the relationship is more complicated than simply saying that El Ni\u00f1o causes drought over India. El Ni\u00f1o is one of the most important large-scale phenomena that influences the Indian monsoon, but it does not determine the season on its own. Of the 16 El Ni\u00f1o years recorded since 1950, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2083268&amp;reg=48&amp;lang=2\">only seven<\/a> were associated with below-normal monsoon rainfall over India. Other factors play a role, including the Indian Ocean temperatures and wind patterns, snow cover in the Himalayas and Eurasia, along with the monsoon\u2019s own natural variability from year to year.<\/p>\n<p>More importantly, a weaker monsoon does not necessarily mean an absence of extreme rainfall or floods. A study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.adg5577\">Science<\/a> in 2025, analysing more than a century of rainfall observations, found that El Ni\u00f1o summers can produce lower rainfall overall while simultaneously intensifying extreme daily rainfall, particularly over parts of central-eastern India and the southwest coast (where Kerala is located). (Boundaries shown on the map do not imply official endorsement or acceptance).<\/span><br \/>\n              <span class=\"attribution\"><span class=\"source\">Ligin Joseph (Data: IMD)<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The recent experience in Kerala \u2013 a seasonal rainfall deficit interrupted by an exceptionally wet week and severe flooding \u2013 is consistent with this broader pattern, although the individual flood itself cannot be attributed to El Ni\u00f1o without a dedicated analysis.<\/p>\n<h2>What happens next?<\/h2>\n<p>There is certainly reason to keep a close watch on the Pacific. El Ni\u00f1o is already strengthening rapidly, and is expected to be very strong throughout the northern hemisphere autumn and winter of 2026-27. <\/p>\n<p>However, this does not mean that India is destined for drought. An El Ni\u00f1o of this magnitude increases the likelihood of drought, flooding and other typical impacts, but they are not guaranteed.<\/p>\n<p>This El Ni\u00f1o is expected to peak after the core summer monsoon season, but it is already strengthening while the monsoon is still underway.
