Their inference is clear: people should always be in the loop \u2013 the AI is never in charge.<\/p>\n<p>But amid <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/ai-robots-can-go-rogue-a-researcher-explains-how-easily-it-happens-284766\">stories<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/hugging-face-model-evaluation-security-incident\/\">AI models going rogue<\/a> and the prospect of <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/is-recursive-self-improvement-the-dawning-of-ai-superintelligence-287081\">recursive self-improvement<\/a> (when AIs can improve themselves), is this form of language still appropriate \u2013 or a linguistic smokescreen we should be wary of?<\/p>\n<p>In my career researching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nottingham.ac.uk\/sociology\/people\/brigitte.nerlich\">science, language and society<\/a>, I have studied the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techspot.com\/news\/111967-someone-tallied-all-microsoft-copilot-products-there-80.html\">use of \u201cco\u201d<\/a> and other <a href=\"https:\/\/makingsciencepublic.com\/2026\/06\/19\/making-sense-of-ai-an-anthology-of-language-metaphor-and-public-understanding\/\">linguistic trends used by AI companies<\/a> to describe and market their products.<\/p>\n<p>The humble prefix \u201cco\u201d, derived from the Latin preposition \u201ccom\u201d, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etymonline.com\/word\/co-\">means<\/a> \u201ctogether\u201d, \u201cmutually\u201d or \u201cin common\u201d. But what seems linguistically unremarkable can, in the modern context of AI systems, convey a lot of interesting \u2013 and potentially misleading \u2013 meanings.<\/p>\n<p>While \u201cAI assistant\u201d implies a subordinate role and \u201cAI agent\u201d real autonomy, \u201cco\u201d evokes shared agency and joint ownership of a task. This makes it strategically <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2604.21043\">ambiguous<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An AI co-product can be sold to investors as capable and autonomous, thus justifying its price and ambition. At the same time, it can be sold to users and regulators as safely subordinate, reassuring them that a human is still in control.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">An introduction to the AI \u2018companion\u2019 Copilot. Video: Microsoft.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Copilot takes off<\/h2>\n<p>One of the most interesting uses of \u201cco\u201d to convey a particular message about AI products is Copilot \u2013 the name of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/microsoft-copilot\/organizations#watchmecopilotvideo\">Microsoft\u2019s suite of AI models<\/a>. In aviation, a copilot supports the pilot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/copilot\">but isn\u2019t in command<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Observer newspaper\u2019s technology journalist John Naughton has <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.co.uk\/news\/science-technology\/article\/ten-metaphors-for-ai\">called copilot<\/a> \u201cthe tech industry\u2019s favourite metaphor\u201d, because it lets the human feel in charge while the tool actually fosters dependency.<\/p>\n<p>The word entered AI discourse as a metaphor when GitHub, a coding platform, <a href=\"https:\/\/github.blog\/news-insights\/product-news\/introducing-github-copilot-ai-pair-programmer\/\">released<\/a> an AI coding tool called GitHub Copilot. This was built in collaboration with OpenAI \u2013 the company that a year later became famous overnight when it released ChatGPT.<\/p>\n<p>GitHub used the name Copilot to metaphorically frame \u201cpair programming\u201d \u2013 in the sense of the AI model being a second coder sitting beside you, assisting but never taking the wheel. GitHub foregrounded this aviation metaphor with the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/features\/copilot\">headline<\/a>: \u201cCommand your craft\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>By 2023, Microsoft (which owns GitHub) had rebranded a dozen products \u2013 from its search chatbot to Windows and its Office software \u2013 under the Copilot name. (According to the tech news site <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/information-technology\/2023\/11\/bing-chat-is-now-microsoft-copilot-in-potentially-confusing-rebranding-move\/\">Ars Technica<\/a>, the joke inside Microsoft was that it would need a branding copilot simply to keep track of all these products.)<\/p>\n<p>Around the same time, \u201cco-intelligence\u201d entered wider use as the <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.bookshop.org\/p\/books\/co-intelligence-living-and-working-with-ai-ethan-mollick\/d49a802fa1e380a6?ean=9780753560778&amp;bkshp-astro=t\">title of a book<\/a> by prominent American AI researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/mgmt.wharton.upenn.edu\/profile\/emollick\/\">Ethan Mollick<\/a>. This book, a New York Times bestseller, stretched the metaphor from product branding into a general way of talking about living alongside AI as co-worker and co-creator, sharing a form of co-intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Not long after, Microsoft researcher Advait Sarkar and colleagues <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/html\/2412.15030v1\">wrote a paper<\/a> suggesting that generative AI could see one aviation metaphor, copilot, being replaced by another: autopilot. They warned that \u201cpowerful AI capabilities may lead humans to disengage from critical thinking and simply defer to AI output \u2026 causing knowledge work to go on autopilot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rather than sharing responsibility for the output of these models, the implication was that in an increasing number of cases, no one was really at the controls.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">How OpenAI\u2019s pre-release model \u2018escaped\u2019 to launch a cyber-attack. Video: Channel 4 News.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>AI anthropomorphism<\/h2>\n<p>A 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s44271-025-00376-6\">study<\/a> found rising anthropomorphism \u2013 the assignment of human traits and emotions to non-human things \u2013 in how people view and talk about AI tools. This suggests techniques such as the \u201cco\u201d framing have been persuasive, not just decorative.<\/p>\n<p>Metaphors can make even the very unfamiliar \u2013 such as black box AI systems \u2013 seem familiar. In the case of copilot and other co-words, they are used to sell systems to industry and ordinary users in different ways. Google DeepMind\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-026-10644-y\">Co-Scientist<\/a>, for example, is framed as a research partner even though it operates as something closer to a team of <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-ai-scientist-now-academic-papers-can-be-fully-automated-what-does-this-mean-for-the-future-of-research-282161\">AI agents working with minimal oversight<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps tellingly, Mollick\u2019s follow-up to Co-Intelligence, due out in October 2026, is entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.bookshop.org\/p\/books\/co-existence-the-next-phase-of-ai-ethan-mollick\/6dd56764eaf41849?ean=9780753562369&amp;bkshp-astro=t\">Co-Existence: The Next Phase of AI<\/a>. This might indicate that the conversation has moved from whether to how we should live alongside something that is now established beyond the power of human control.<\/p>\n<p>Three years ago, computer scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/people\/asellen\/\">Abigail Sellen<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/people\/horvitz\/\">Eric Horvitz<\/a> \u2013 who also have key roles within Microsoft \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2311.14713\">called for<\/a> \u201cdesigns for human-AI partnership that cede ultimate control and responsibility to the human user as pilot, with the AI co-pilot acting in a well-defined supporting role\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But that view of human-AI interaction already feels outdated. Recently, during an internal evaluation by US company Open AI, a pre-release AI model managed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c3ek3gvdnj3o\">hack into another platform<\/a> in an incident variously described as the AI agent <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/07\/21\/openai-says-hugging-face-was-breached-by-its-pre-release-models\/\">\u201cescaping\u201d<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cdrvy3pn3r0o\">\u201cgoing rogue\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, there is a linguistic point to note here. By portraying AI agents as autonomous actors, such <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/psychology\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyg.2025.1498958\/full\">language<\/a> points the finger of blame towards the agent, rather than the companies who build and operate them.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><em>This article contains links to bookshop.org.
